Years Of Experience In This Ground
Emiliano Zapata’s story is the story of Mexico’s struggle for justice, dignity, and land. Born on August 8, 1879, in Anenecuilco, a small village in the state of Morelos, Zapata grew up witnessing the injustices faced by peasant farmers under the long dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz. The vast haciendas (estates) of wealthy landowners had taken over communal village lands, leaving the rural poor without means to survive.
Even before the Revolution, Zapata showed remarkable leadership, organizing local villagers to defend their ancestral lands. His deep understanding of the people’s suffering and his determination to act made him the natural leader of the agrarian movement that would soon shake the foundations of Mexican society.
The Plan of Ayala was more than a political manifesto it was a moral declaration. Zapata demanded the immediate return of lands, forests, and waters to the peasants who had been dispossessed. It called for expropriation of large estates, justice for the rural poor, and punishment for leaders who had deceived the people.
Its rallying cry “Tierra y Libertad” (Land and Liberty) became the heartbeat of Zapata’s movement and an enduring symbol of agrarian struggle across Latin America

what We Do
When Francisco I. Madero called for a national uprising against Díaz in 1910, Zapata and his followers joined the cause, hoping that victory would mean the return of stolen lands.

Zapata organized and led the Liberation Army of the South, a disciplined yet grassroots force composed mostly of peasants. His soldiers were motivated not by ambition or wealth, but by a shared dream: to reclaim their land and autonomy
On April 10, 1919, Emiliano Zapata was assassinated in Chinameca, Morelos, lured into a trap under false pretenses of negotiation. His death shocked the nation but did not silence his cause
